Do you remember when the “Got Milk?” campaign launched in 1993? Instead of focusing the benefits of drinking dairy milk, the campaign highlighted instances where people wanted milk to solve a sticky situation. The campaign went on to feature numerous celebrities and fictional characters like Batman and SpongeBob SquarePants sporting a milk mustache. Though the campaign was informally retired in 2014, it remains a popular slogan and cultural reference to this day.
So, why do I have “Got Milk?” on my mind?
In late May, Holmes Murphy will welcome 80 new interns for a 12-week internship in our offices across the country. The halls of Holmes Murphy will be bustling with excitement as we teach and learn from these incredible students. Even though most of our interns weren’t born when “Got Milk?” launched, the campaign came to mind when I was thinking about the value of interns for our business.
Investing in Interns Pays Off
I personally have a ton of passion for our internship program, given that I started my career with Holmes Murphy as an intern in 2001. Does your company have an internship program? Consider what your organization might be missing out on by not investing in interns, especially as the job market becomes increasingly competitive. As we prepare to welcome the future leaders of Holmes Murphy, I wanted to put a spin on “Got Milk?” and instead ask “Got Interns?”
So, what do our interns bring to the table? When you’ve “Got Interns,” you’ve got…
- Energy: I promise one intern can drive a ton of energy for your organization. Just imagine 80!
- Innovation: Young talent thinks differently and can help you think differently for your organization.
- Future Talent: That’s right, your internship program is a pipeline for future talent. I am proud that we hired back nearly 50% of our 2023 internship class as either full time employees or second summer interns. Over the course of 12 weeks in the summer, our team really gets to understand our interns and determine where they may fit within our organization.
- New Perspective: Encourage your interns to be part of brainstorming sessions and company meetings. They will bring a perspective that your company hasn’t considered before, which may prompt you to make strategic changes.
- Mentor/Mentee Relationships: Our employees love helping young talent be successful and provide guidance. This is a great opportunity for our current workforce to pay it forward and our interns to see the value in investing in people and the future of our business.
